Community Funding

Broadcom Foundation's Mission is to advance education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by funding research, recognizing scholarship and increasing opportunity.

Broadcom Foundation accepts unsolicited applications from qualified entities between April 30 and June 30.

The Open Application Period for 2012 funding is now closed.

Funding Guidelines

Broadcom Foundation requires organizations that seek funding support to meet criteria for Funding Eligibility to determine if there is a match between an applicant's funding needs and Broadcom Foundation Mission and gift guidelines.

Broadcom Foundation accepts online applications from qualifying entities in communities where Broadcom has a significant presence and where Broadcom employees live and work. Broadcom Foundation funds on the following:

  • STEM Education
  • Health
  • Human Services

Applications are received by invitation from Broadcom Foundation and during the Open Enrollment Period from April 30 to June 30. Broadcom Foundation respects the time and effort that goes into submitting a request for funding and will respond to completed applications within three months of the closing date of the Open Proposal Period.

Because Broadcom Foundation strives to be an effective steward of the environment, only online applications are accepted by Broadcom Foundation. Due to the high volume of requests received, not every request that matches Broadcom Foundation criteria will receive funding.

Broadcom Foundation favors programs that are able to do the following:

  • Demonstrate measurable results or outcomes
  • Utilize innovative and sustainable or scalable approaches
  • Create potential for program replication by other funders

Broadcom Foundation adheres to a policy of carefully scrutinizing operating budgets, strategic plans, board participation and other sources of support for projects for which funding is sought. All organizations must demonstrate solid financial and program management and be willing to share financial and program audit reports upon request.

STEM University Funding requirements:

  • By Invitation Only
  • Institutions recognized for academic excellence in STEM fields and committed to innovation in STEM education consistent with the Foundation Mission
  • Program contains a significant training and/or research component
  • Focus on innovation in the academic field

Community Engagement Funding requirements:

Broadcom Foundation Community Engagement program funds:

  • Proposals must be submitted during the Open Proposal Period
  • Program should provide support in communities where Broadcom Corporation employees live and work or where Broadcom Corporation has a significant presence
  • Eligible qualifying nonprofits must support STEM Education or, Health and Human Services
  • Program should align with the Mission and Goals of Broadcom Foundation
  • Program should be innovative and offer significant potential as a sustainable or scalable model
  • Program should include strong monitoring, evaluation and results reporting

Broadcom Foundation does not fund equipment or capital projects



Qualified Entities

  • Qualified U.S.- based tax-exempt public 501(c)(3) charities with high-quality programs and services, well-defined goals, a proven record of maximizing available resources, and a reputation for meeting objectives and reporting measured results
  • Governmental entities (public universities, public schools, etc.)
  • Organizations not recognized as a 501(c)(3) public charity or as a government entity (i.e., foreign organizations, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and/or private foundations) may be considered if invited to apply by Broadcom Foundation

Broadcom Foundation WILL NOT entertain funding requests from the following entities:

  • Individuals
  • For-profit entities
  • Fraternal, labor, political or social organizations
  • Political parties or candidates
  • Sectarian religious organizations
  • Private schools K-12
  • Trade or business associations
  • Organizations that are not publicly supported charities exempt from tax under IRC section 501(c)(3)
  • Organizations that discriminate on the basis of race, religion, creed, gender, national origin, or other similar factors

Broadcom Foundation WILL NOT entertain funding requests for the following activities:

  • Advertising journals, booklets, etc
  • Any purpose that directly benefits Broadcom Corporation or a Broadcom employee
  • Capital campaigns (unless initiated by Broadcom Foundation)
  • Congresses, symposiums, and meetings
  • Individual or family requests for scholarships, fellowship assistance or other types of support
  • Lobbying
  • Technical research in support of Broadcom Corporation products
  • Political candidates, campaigns and activities
  • Sporting events (tickets and sponsorships)
  • The benefit of any particular individual, including individual travel and/or study
  • Travel expenses
  • Trips, tours or cultural exchange programs
  • University administrative, management or indirect fees
  • Organizations that collect funds for redistribution to other nonprofit groups

Funding is generally NOT approved for:

  • Endowments, capital or building campaigns
  • Regular, ongoing, operating support
  • Agencies, projects or programs normally financed by government sources
  • Contingencies, deficits or debt reduction
  • Contributions in the name of a memorial tribute
  • Special fundraising event table or ticket purchases (i.e., dinners, walks, runs, rides, etc.)
  • Matching gifts

Open Proposal Period

Broadcom Foundation accepts unsolicited online applications from qualified entities between April 30 and June 30.

Funding Eligibility

In order to make an online application, all applicants are required to complete a Funding Eligibility screen to determine if there is a match between an applicant's funding needs and the mission of the Broadcom Foundation Mission.

Due to the high volume of requests received, not all eligible organizations will receive funding.
